George Petihakis, is a Research Director at HCMR/Institute of Oceanography with 30 years of experience on operational oceanography with particular emphasis on marine ecological modelling, marine observations, and data analysis. During this period, he has been involved as coordinator, principal investigator and researcher, in 50 EU and national projects. He has 82 published papers in peer reviewed journals, 39 publications in books and scientific series, 32 invited talks and 127 publications in conference proceedings. He is the head for the observation component of the POSEIDON monitoring, forecasting and information system for the Greek Seas and the HCMR delegate at EuroGOOS. During the period 2015-2021 he was elected as a member of the EuroGOOS Executive Board of Directors, holding the positions of Vice-Chair (2015-2018) and Chair (2018-2021). He is a deputy delegate at the European Marine Board (2018 – today) and since 2016, he is a member of European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) Steering Group and one of the two Greek delegates at the JPI Oceans management board. He is the regional facility (Hellenic Arc) leader at EMSO-ERIC. Moreover, since 2022 he is Co-Chair of the IOC Ocean Best Practices System.
